There is a video clip that seems to circulate social media in recent years whenever there is a disaster — natural or manmade. It is an interview with beloved children’s TV pioneer Mister Rogers talking about how whenever there was something scary or catastrophic on the news when he was a child, his mother taught him to always look for the people who were helping and find strength and courage in them.
As we have watched both Houston and most recently my own state of Florida cope with first Hurricane Harvey and then Hurricane Irma in recent weeks, this approach has really struck home. I have found there are always helpers. Look for them. And if you are fortunate enough to have avoided or escaped these tragedies, look for ways you and and your practice can be the helpers.
At the end of the day, it is all about community. Reach out. Give back. We are all in this together.
